She raised a hand to shield her eyes from the blinding light. As her vision adjusted, she noticed shadow creatures hovering at the edge of the stone lookout. She reached for her pentacle, her touchstone, but it wasnât there. Instead, she saw Harrisonâs body sprawled at the base of the stairs, his eyes open in a silent moan. Then, his light extinguished.
A man materialized beside her under a clear blue sky. He wore clothes like Harrisonâs, but she didnât recognize his face. He clutched her shoulder. âYou have to help me.â
âHow are you touching me?â she asked, her voice shaky.
âThis is a dream, Charlie,â the spirit said. âI can do anything I want here.â
âWho are you?â
âI need your help,â he repeated, urgency in his voice.
âOkay, I can help you, but you have to tell me who you are.â
âPete McAllister.â He planted his hands on his hips and looked around. âThis is all wrong. This shouldnât be happening to me.â
âWhat shouldnât be happening?â
âI shouldnât be dead. You have to help me.â
âIâm so sorry,â she faltered, âbut it seems you are.â
The spirit drifted closer to Harrisonâs body. âThatâs me.â
âI donât think so,â Charlie countered. âThatâs Harrison. He died this morning.â
âI know, but itâs me,â he insisted, his dark eyes hollow and pleading. âYou have to help me.â
The air chilled as he placed his hands on her shoulders, freezing her in place.
âDonât touch me!â She attempted to pull away, but his grip held her fast, and her feet refused to move.
A hiss echoed in her head.
âHold him,â Ben Azrael hissed.
Charlieâs gaze darted around until it landed on Ben Azrael. He circled the lookout, using his scythe to dispatch shadow creatures, their growls dying as they vanished.
âOh my God.â McAllister gasped as Ben Azrael closed in on him.
He released Charlie and backed away.
âCome with me,â Ben Azrael commanded.
âNo! Iâm not supposed to be dead.â McAllister vanished, leaving Ben Azrael slashing at the air.
He turned on Charlie, his eyes blazing.
âThis is all your fault. You shouldnât be here!â He charged at her, but he dissipated with a dull roar just before impact.
Charlie shot upright, drenched in sweat and panting. The rhythmic lull of the ocean filled the room, and she took several deep breaths of the warm sea air. Her heart rate returned to normal, and she looked around. The bed was empty, the folding doors open. She left the bed, making her way onto the balcony where Tom sat at the bistro table, feet propped up on the railing.
âHi,â she murmured.
Tom swiveled to face her.
âHi.â He cocked his head. âWhatâs wrong?â
âJust a bad dream. A weird one.â She scrubbed the sleep from her eyes. âI think todayâs events got to me more than I realized.â
Tom extended a hand and opened his arms. âWant to talk about it?â
Charlie ignored his invitation. Instead, she sat in the empty chair before relaying the dream. Tom put his elbows on the table and listened with an intent gaze.
âI wonder who the ghost is?â
âWe can check to see if Pete McAllisterâs staying at the resort.
